Airbus 320 VIP interior experience using augmented reality

Client:
Fokker Services
Scope: Participatory design, experience design, augmented reality and interactive tracking.

Overview
Fokker Services is an independent aerospace service provider, supporting a large fleet of various aircraft types. To improve their customer experience Fokker Services approached Better Fly team at TU Delft and provided a brief to design new modular interior concepts for Airbus320 series for VIP customers.

Process
The project started with researching context, domain knowledge for aerospace industry, sales process at Fokker Services and interviewing customers. During the research Betterfly team realized that it was not a new interior concept that customers want rather a better way to participate in the design process in order to know what they will get.

Various concepts were generated and tested with Fokker Services and VIP customers for new ways of participation in the design phase of the VIP Airbus 320 interior. After few iterations, a concept was chosen and further developed as part of the project.

Result
End result was a 3D visualization based on augmented reality using projection and interactive tracking which allows users to experience the interior with different layouts, settings and materials. For the proof-of-concept LCD projector, scaled down models, camera-based tracking and interactive image projection using CAD packages were used.

A flash application was build which support the user interaction by capturing the object movement through optical sensors and send the information to CAD packages for desired image projection.

Here is the visualization of set-up for the experience room during sales process.

The findings of the project are not allowed to show in public, but for research and inspiration, we have gathered lots of information on our blog. Check the blog at http://betterfly.weblog.tudelft.nl
